Leicester City began talks with FC Porto for full-back Ricardo Pereira, according to the Leicester Mercury.

Foxes boss Claude Puel is keen to reunite with the 24-year-old who played for him when he was in charge at Nice.

Danny Simpson’s injury and Daniel Amartey’s naivety pushed Puel into action and the three-times capped Portugal international is top of his wanted list. The lack of depth is alarming the Frenchman and he is determined to act swiftly this summer after a quiet winter.

Leicester, the report claims, lodged a bid of £22m for Pereira, which was enough to get them a seat at the negotiating table. With the debacle over the Adrien Silva transfer last summer still fresh in their memory, the Foxes are keen to wrap up the deal quickly.

Pereira enjoyed two years with Nice, playing 26 times during the final year of Puel’s reign. The Frenchman departed for an unsuccessful stint in charge of Southampton, but Pereira remained on the Riviera and played an integral part in the club’s return to the upper echelons of Ligue Un.

Now back at Porto, he has made 21 appearances for the first team, capping some fine displays with a brace of goals.
