Southampton On Alert As Vietto Seeks Atletico Exit

With the arrival of Diego Costa, 28, places in the Atletico Madrid forward line are at a premium and 23-year-old Luciano Vietto isn’t prepared to put his career on hold while he waits for the chance to arise, claims talkSPORT.

Having spent last season on loan at Sevilla, the Argentine Under-20 international got a taste for first team football and wants to leave the Wanda Metropolitano for more. Sevilla didn’t exercise their option to buy after Vietto failed to find his shooting boots.

In 21 La Liga appearances, he netted just six times. He fared better in the cup competitions when he scored four in ten games but it wasn’t enough to persuade the Andalus side to make the move permanent.

Southampton are in the market for a striker. The club has history with taking under-rated forwards and rejuvenating their careers, which may appeal to Vietto. He has only scored 20 goals in one season – for Villarreal in 2014-15, his first in Spanish football – but his record of 55 goals in 210 league appearances will be off-putting for all but the most determined of suitors.

The Saints tried to tempt Vietto to St Mary’s in the summer but he chose to remain in the Spanish capital. So far this season, he has yet to find the net which combined with the arrival of Costa, may feed his insecurity and provide impetus for a move to the Premier League.
