On a day where the bizarre was considered normal, Riyad Mahrez’s ‘disappearance’ was a major talking point. Until now, the 26-year-old’s whereabouts were a closely guarded secret. The Daily Star on Sunday revealed that the Leicester City midfielder was in fact waiting for Manchester United to agree a fee so that he could move to Old Trafford.
Or at least that’s what his agents briefed the press. It was either that or he was a Pinewood auditioning to be Daniel Craig’s replacement as the new James Bond. With his ability to go ‘underground’, Mahrez would be perfectly suited to the fictional MI6 world. He’d even be given the number 7 shirt by M.
The Algerian winger’s antics are on a par with those of West Ham United striker Diafra Sakho. His move to Rennes fell through when the Hammers refused to sell him. This despite the Senegalese international agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
Despite intense speculation that Mahrez would leave the King Power Stadium this summer, he remains a Foxes player. Expected bids from Arsenal, PSG and Barcelona never materialised while AS Roma fell a long way short of Leicester’s £50m valuation.
It’s the second summer running that the winger has failed to engineer a move away from the East Midlands. Maybe next year it will be third time lucky?
