While everyone’s attention turned toward Manchester City as Alexis Sanchez’s deadline day destination, the Sunday Express claims that Arsenal offered the 28-year-old Chilean striker to Real Madrid while no-one was looking.
The Bernabeu would be an attractive destination for Sanchez but the Madrid hierarchy stunned the Gunners by refusing to spend the £50m+ the north London club wanted for their prize asset.
Their reason was simple: Sanchez is available on a free transfer next summer and their forward line is currently well-stocked.
While Alexis had his heart set on reuniting with former boss Pep Guardiola, a move to the reigning Spanish champions and undisputed kings of European club football would prove irresistible, despite his past as a Barcelona player.
Sanchez’s fitness levels were criticised by Sulantay, a former Chile coach who is now in charge of Cobreloa in the country’s second division. He was it was claimed, “overweight” and troubled by the failure of his move to the Etihad.
Chile’s 0 – 3 reverse against Paraguay leaving the double Copa America winners in trouble as they seek to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia. Sanchez’s performance was criticised as lacklustre giving Arsenal fans a hint of what might be to come when the striker returns to north London later this week.
