Manchester City to Launch Martin January Bid

Manchester City are set to act swiftly following the news that Benjamin Mendy is set to miss the remainder of the season, reports talkSPORT.

The Premier League leaders are eyeing a raid on La Liga with Espanyol’s left back Aaron Martin, 20, their target.

Mendy, a €58m signing from Monaco in the summer, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the recent 5 – 0 win over Crystal Palace.

City’s scouting network identified Martin as the ideal replacement for Mendy in the short-term but also with long-term prospects.

After spending two years with RCDE ‘B’, Martin made his first team debut in October 2016 against Villarreal. Since then, he has made 37 appearances for the Catalan capital’s second club and become a regular fixture in the starting line-up.

Although he has yet to record his first goal for the club, his progress is marked as astonishing in some quarters, with assured performances in domestic competitions.

Currently under contract until 2020, City were expected to move for Martin next summer but the extent of Mendy’s injury means they are likely to make a move in the upcoming January window.

Martin was a member of the Spanish Under-19 team which won the 2015 European Championships in Russia, having previously represented his country at Under-15 level.
