Real Madrid have not been shy regarding their desire to improve their midfield depth heading into the 2018-19 season. Even though several names have been mentioned as potential alternatives to bolster Los Merengues’ depth, a new player has been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu outfit. And quite frankly it’s a shocking one.
We are talking about Thiago Alcantara, a Spain international who also plays for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. The shocking part is the fact that Thiago spent his youth years, debuted and even played regularly in the first team for Madrid’s biggest rivals, FC Barcelona.
This wouldn’t be the first time a former Barcelona or Real Madrid player goes the other way. It happened with Robert Prosinecki, Michael Laudrup and, most recently, Luis Figo. It is unclear whether Madrid fans would accept him, but the player has been heavily linked with an exit from Allianz Arena this summer and it seems a return to LaLiga is on the cards for him.
Real Madrid will have competition to land Thiago, though, as Atletico Madrid are also interested in the Spain international. Alternatively, Thiago would be open to move to Manchester City and FC Barcelona if the chance arises, but that is only if Bayern decide to let him go since he is still under contract with the German giants until 2021.
Thiago has emerged as a quality signing for Bayern since joining the club in a €25 million deal from Barcelona back in 2013. He has 22 goals and 24 assists in 142 competitive appearances with Die Roten.
