A FIFA-imposed transfer ban has been lifted on Atletico, allowing them to register new players from today. Diego Costa and Vitolo both officially moved to the Wanda Metropolitano having agreed deals last year.
Gaitan, 26, joined Atletico eighteen months ago from Benfica in a €25m deal, but reports in the Spanish media claim the Argentina international has not lived up to the expectations of compatriot and Atletico head coach, Diego Simeone.
West Ham’s new manager David Moyes is determined to strengthen his squad which sits uncomfortably close to the Premier League trapdoor. The wheels came off the Hammers mini-revival with defeat at Bournemouth, leaving the East End club 18th in the table.
Manchester United were previously interested in the Argentine winger whose phenomenal record at Benfica made him one of Europe’s most coveted talents. In his 253 appearances, he scored 41 goals and created 88 more giving him a record of a goal every other game.
However, Jose Mourinho’s attention is drawn elsewhere leaving West Ham as the leaders for Gaitan’s signature. Vitolo’s arrival in the Spanish capital after a loan spell with Las Palmas signalled the Argentinean’s time was over at the club.
