Manchester City and Arsenal are looking closely at West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans once again, reports Football London.

Baggies boss Alan Pardew admitted before the weekend’s clash with Arsenal that he will have to sell before he can strengthen his squad.

The 29-year-old Northern Ireland international is wanted by both Premier League high-flyers whose squad’s lack depth in central defensive positions.

Arsenal’s problems appear most immediate; Nacho Monreal, 31, is out until mid-January with injury while Laurent Koscielny, 30, is beset by Achilles problems.

With Per Mertesacker, 35, set to take on the role of Academy manager at the end of the season and showing signs of age, Arsene Wenger is concerned that his squad will fall short as they challenge for the Champions League places, as well as the Europa League and FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola also has concerns about the heart of the Manchester City defence. John Stones, 22, injury underlined the thinness of his squad in this area with Eliaquim Mangala, 26, not convincing when called upon.

The Spaniard is keen on intensifying competition for places in his squad as City progress through the season unbeaten. They had a scare at Selhurst Park this afternoon when only a penalty save from Ederson kept their record intact.
