There’s a feeling that the summer’s transfer dramas are soon to reach their conclusion. One of the most protracted may yet have a twist in the tale as the Sunday Mirror claims that Alexis Sanchez, 28, is ready to hand in a transfer request to force a move to Manchester City.
At the same time, it’s emerged that Paris St Germain are preparing a cheeky £35m bid in the hope Arsenal will accept a reduced fee rather than lose the Chilean to a Premier League rival. As divorces go, this one is already getting messy.
Alexis is currently in Chile recuperating from an outbreak of man-flu which precluded him from returning to Arsenal. Arsene Wenger, having told the media that his mercurial striker was due to begin pre-season training on Sunday, backtracked and claimed it was now Tuesday. Few eyebrows will be raised if it is pushed back further.
The apparent desire to move to Manchester City is at once both understandable and bizarre. City are in the Champions League and closer to winning the tournament than Arsenal, currently. Yet the story is portrayed as a grand reunion between Sanchez and Pep Guardiola.
While the Catalan signed the player for Barcelona, at the end of that season he was gone, initially on a sabbatical and then resurfacing at Bayern Munich. The sentimentality is overcooked on this one; it’s about money and City has more than Arsenal.
