Everton, desperate to find a new manager and claw their way out of the Premier League relegation zone, emerged as a surprise suitor for Alexis Sanchez, according to the Daily Mail.

The 28-year-old Arsenal striker has yet to agree a new contract with the Gunners and is increasingly likely to head toward the Emirates exit door in the next two transfer windows.

Speculation that Manchester City were going to make a £20m bid for the Chile international was crushed at the weekend. Reports claimed City were still furious with the north London club over the manner in which a deal collapsed on the last day of the transfer window.

Arsenal hoped to land Thomas Lemar, 21, from Monaco in a £92m deal but were thwarted when the player declared himself “too rushed” to make a decision. As a result, Sanchez stayed put at Arsenal.

Everton, sensing an opportunity, are ready to offer the Gunners £30m for Sanchez this January as they seek to rescue their season from the ashes of Ronald Koeman’s reign.

David Unsworth oversaw their 0 – 2 defeat at Leicester City yesterday afternoon but without reinforcements, there is little hope of improvement from the woeful Toffees this season.

There seems little prospect of Sanchez moving to Merseyside but if he did it would be not only a kick in the teeth to Arsenal and Manchester City but also Liverpool whom he spurned in 2013.
