Gerard Deulofeu had always been considered one of the top prospects from FC Barcelona’s academy over the last few years. However, the winger never got a chance to settle, and has spent most of his career away from Camp Nou.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan with Everton and AC Milan, and he finally lived up to expectations in the second half of the season with the Serie A giants. As a result, Barcelona decided to use bring him back to the squad, and have signed him from Everton in a €12 million deal.
Los Blaugranas confirmed that they will exercise their right to re-sign Spain international after leaving to Goodison Park two summers ago for €6 million, and he is expected to become one of the top attacking options coming off the bench as a suitable backup for both Lionel Messi and Neymar. Barcelona had until June 30 to activate the buyback option, and Barcelona announced the transfer on an official statement in the club’s website.
“Barcelona have exercised their right to re-sign the player Gerard Deulofeu,” the club said in a statement on Friday. “In the coming days, the necessary conditions to complete the deal will be finalised with both Everton and the player. Deulofeu’s contract with Barcelona is until 2019.”
Deulofeu had four goals and three assists in 17 Serie A appearances with Milan this past season. The winger is Barcelona’s second signing of the summer, as Los Blaugranas had previously confirmed the arrival of Brazilian defender Marlon Santos on a permanent deal earlier this month.
