Arsenal Fail With Lemar Bid, Talks Set To Continue

Arsenal and the transfer window aren’t the most comfortable of bedfellows. The Gunners get there in the end but it is never as straightforward a journey as other clubs seem to enjoy.

The latest bump in the road came when Monaco rejected a £31m bid for Thomas Lemar, according to the TalkSPORT.

A deal for the 21-year-old French international can still be reached. Gunners negotiators remain in contact with the Principality-based club and remain hopeful of reaching agreement on the transfer early next week.

Arsenal aren’t far off Monaco’s €40m valuation of the midfielder so there is a gap of around €7m to close. It isn’t much and there is a school of thought which says, “Just pay it”. That would certainly save Gooners the heartache of no business being completed before the season begins.

If the deal falls through, there is a home-based talent, ready, willing, and able to replace Lemar as the object of Wenger’s affections. Riyad Mahrez, tired of Barcelona’s procrastination, is ready to step into Alexis’ shoes should Lemar not fill them.

Frustration is the name of the Arsenal game. Alexandre Lacazette remains a target but Lyon won’t do business for less than £57m. The Gunners are again €7m short on that valuation and continue to talk to their French counterparts.

A slow summer may spring suddenly into life although were we betting men, this has completion at midnight on deadline day written all over it.
