The striker has been handed the number 19 shirt after becoming one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. Having passed his medical, the terms of his five-year contract were swiftly agreed yesterday.
Jurgen Klopp has tracked the player for a long time and was delighted to have captured the pacey forward: “I have followed Sadio for a lot of years since his impressive performances in the Olympics in 2012, and then watched his development in Austria and in his time at Southampton.
“Since I came here I have spoken to the staff a lot about him and have always felt he could be a very good signing for us. He has a lot of quality, works hard and has a very good goalscoring record.”
Mane scored 11 Premier League goals for Southampton last season as they finished in the Europa League places but was eager to move to a club he viewed as one of the biggest in Europe.
A number of clubs had looked at the Senegalese international in the past with Manchester United making enquiries whilst he was at Austrian club, Red Bull Salzburg. Liverpool through, acted decisively having first asked the Saints about his availability last week.
With 25 goals in his 75 Southampton appearances, including the fastest-ever hat-trick in the Premier League, Mane will give Liverpool’s goal-shy forward line a lift. Expectations will be high with his £30m fee bettered only by the transfers of Andy Carroll and Christian Benteke.
Reds supporters will be hoping that Mane’s Anfield career turns out better than two players who struggled to recapture their best form on Merseyside.
