Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho’s determination to strengthen his defence led to a £57m bid being submitted for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar reports the Manchester Evening News.

The 23-year-old Slovakia international will be the second addition to the United back four, following the arrival of full-back Diogo Dalot earlier this month.

News of United’s interest in Skriniar deals a blow to Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld’s hopes of moving to Old Trafford. The Red Devils were keen to land the Belgium international but talks between the two clubs faltered, mainly over the north London club’s insistence that the fee be in the region of £25m.

It’s claimed in Italy that Internazionale rejected the initial bid from United with the Nerazzurri holding out for £70m. That would give the Milanese club a £50m profit after they paid £20m to Sampdoria for Skriniar’s services last summer.

He quickly established himself at the San Siro and featured in every one of Inter’s 38 Serie A games which ended with them pinching fourth – and the final Champions League spot – from Lazio with a 3 – 2 win over the Biancoceleste in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Skriniar isn’t committing to a move, however. He told the Slovakia FA website that while was “proud” to have been contacted by United. “I’m even happier that Inter decided to reject it,” he continued, “and that they believe so much in me.”
