Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers refuted claims that Moussa Dembele was leaving Celtic Park for the Premier League, reports the BBC.
Speculation was rife over the Christmas break that the Scottish champions agreed on a fee of £18m with Brighton and Hove Albion for the 21-year-old striker. It wasn’t enough to quash the bookmakers’ belief that the Seagulls will land the uncapped Frenchman. They are offering odds of 2/1 for Brighton to sign Dembele in January.
The Bhoys Northern Irish manager observed “I am not sure where it’s come from. Moussa’s been linked with so many clubs since I’ve been here.”
He quickly pointed out that “there’s been no contact between the clubs…there is no fee, no bid, there have been no talks.”
However, he didn’t rule out a move happening although the chances of a £18m bid succeeding seem remote if Rodgers claim that an “astronomical sum” might see Dembele move on from Parkhead.
Injuries have curtailed Dembele’s first team appearances this season, but he still has 8 goals in his 19 outings.
However, he has made no secret of his international ambitions and may view the Premier League as offering a higher profile in his native France than Scottish football. He must weigh up with Celtic’s regular appearances in the Champions League are furthering his cause or not.
