Manchester City remain comfortable at the top of the Premier League standings, but there is no question the team might need defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window.
The Citizens have been hit by injuries to left-back Benjamin Mendy and centre-back, so manager Pep Guardiola is keen to add at least one defender to the squad during the upcoming transfer period. And he is reportedly setting his sights on Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez
The Spain international would certainly fit the bill, since he can operate both at CB and LB with equal ease. According to a report from The Sun, City “have continued to monitor his performances for Sociedad during the first few months of the season”, so a move could be coming in the next few weeks.
However, City are not the only team interested in Martinez. FC Barcelona have also been connected to the 26-year-old, who is under contract at Real Sociedad until June of 2021. Both sides are expected to battle for his signature, although City could emerge as winners if they make a strong push. They certainly need help considering Mendy will likely miss most of the season.
Martinez has won four caps with Spain, and is likely to be part of the country’s World Cup squad next year. If anything, both City and Barca should make a move soon before he becomes too expensive in the coming months.
