Arsenal’s exodus is under way with 28-year-old Spaniard Lucas Perez set to return to Deportivo La Coruna in a cut-price £9m deal. Signed last summer, Perez was used as a substitute but grabbed some important goals along the way.
However, according to the Evening Standard, Perez is unsettled in north London and growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of first team action. Scoring 5 goals and 4 assists in 9 starts, Perez made a total of 21 appearances and finished with 7 goals.
However, his way to regular first team action was blocked by Alexis Sanchez, 28, and Danny Welbeck, 25. The two internationals were Arsenal’s most productive forwards during an abysmal run in the second half of the season. With Olivier Giroud posting impressive statistics, Perez found himself on the fringes of the action.
Deportivo were his boyhood club and he scored 24 goals in 59 appearances from the club in the two seasons before his signed for Arsenal. Whether there was a miscommunication or not is unclear. However, it’s strange that Perez would believe he was going to feature heavily in the starting line-up.
The Galician club, fallen on hard times in recent years, has made no secret of their desire to re-sign their talismanic forward and have made an offer for his services. However, the Gunners have yet to respond either way, hoping that Sevilla firm up their interest at this weekend’s Emirates Cup tournament in north London.
Either way, the uncapped Spaniard’s unhappy spell at Arsenal is drawing to a close.
