Done Deal: Joe Allen joins Stoke City in £13.5m transfer deal

Stoke City have completed the signing of Joe Allen, 26, from Liverpool. The midfielder has agreed a five-year deal at the bet365 stadium.

A fee of £13.5m takes the Welsh international from Anfield after a summer of speculation that he was returning to Swansea City after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told the midfielder he was surplus to requirements.

Allen arrived at Anfield four years ago, leaving Swansea for £15m, and established himself at the heartbeat of midfield for club and country. As he became less important to Liverpool, he rose in prominence for Wales, proving to be an indispensable member of the squad which reached this summer’s Euro 2016 semi-finals.

In the final year of his contract, Liverpool decided to cash in and re-invest in the squad rather than let Allen run down his current deal. Fellow Welshman Mark Hughes proved persuasive revealed Allen, as he seeks to reinvigorate the club which has become firmly ensconced in mid-table in the Premier League.

He flies out on Tuesday to join the rest of the Stoke squad in Florida and will be joined by Egyptian winger Ramadan Sobhi, who signed from Al-Ahly yesterday. Sobhi’s deal is subject to a work permit being granted.
