The Magpies, embroiled in the relegation battle, are looking to bring in new faces this month as they seek to avoid a quick return to the Championship.
The seven – Aleksandar Mitrovic, Jonjo Shelvey, Chancel Mbemba, 23, Henri Saivet, 27, Dwight Gayle, 27, Jack Colback, 28, and Jamie Sterry, 22 – were stalwarts of last season’s promotion-winning squad, but find themselves surplus to requirements this season.
Newcastle recently rejected a £8m bid from fellow strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion for Serbia international Mitrovic, 23, who has become frustrated with his lack of first-team action.
Fellow striker Gayle has never been a consistently prolific striker despite netting 23 goals last season. Championship club Fulham were expected to move for the former Crystal Palace star but as yet, no offer materialised.
The most surprising name on the list is former England international Shelvey, 25. Once of Swansea and Liverpool, he is attracting the attention of West Ham United near whose training ground he was born. If the Hammers fail to significantly strengthen their midfield this winter, a bid for the Romford-born midfielder is expected.
