It took longer than most pundits expected, but all signs indicate Real Madrid will end up getting the player they have been looking for during the entire transfer window.
According to an exclusive report from Spanish newspaper MARCA, Los Merengues have reached a world-record deal to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco. The numbers are eye-popping and jaw-dropping, as Real Madrid will pay €180 million, consisting of a €160M fee and an extra €20M in incentives. Other sources have indicated the deal could be a €150M fee and €30M in bonuses, though, so there details to iron out.
Monaco have denied the existence of this deal and said such agreement does not exist, but it seems Mbappe is Madrid-bound no matter what. The big problem of having the 18-year-old on the reigning UEFA Champions League winner is to determine where he will play. Real Madrid already have Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, and Cristiano Ronaldo on their squad. Surely one of Benzema or Bale would end up leaving to make space for the wonderkid.
Mbappe enjoyed an impressive season with Monaco, and he will become the most expensive transfer in football history when the deal is completed. Now we only have to wait to see if he can live to the hype of such a lofty price tag.
