Mourinho Urged to Sign Gomes by Madrid Chief

In an unusual twist, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez urged Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to make Andre Gomes, 24, a priority signing next summer, reports Don Balon.

While plenty of Madrileños may wish that Perez spent more time on his own club’s deals, Barcelona won’t be too thrilled with his intervention. Gomes, a Portuguese international, signed for the Catalans in €55m deal in July 2016.

Since then he has made 50 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring three goals in the process. However, there has been a string of speculation linking Gomes with a move away from the Camp Nou. His performances receive regular criticism from the Catalan press with the socios also not accepting that he has reached the required standard.

The twist in the tale comes with the suggestion that Perez’s outburst is driven by Mourinho himself. Already confident of his position in the United hotseat, the Portuguese is regularly quoted in the English media as wanting more players to finish his Premier League project.

It’s understood that his prompting may be a duplicitous game to force the United board into action but also sound out Barcelona’s willingness to sell an expensive acquisition.

While Gomes’ fee included a €35m down-payment, €20m in add-ons is likely to prove a step too far if the powers-that-be in the club share the fans belief about his performances.
