Antonio Conte is set to return to old club Juventus with Leonardi Bonucci his target, according to the Daily Telegraph. The Chelsea boss is determined to strengthen his title-winning squad and land his first Champions League winner’s medal as a coach.
Bonucci was a pivotal member of Conte’s Juventus and Italy teams. His familiarity with the preferred formation of three central defenders and experience gives Chelsea the ideal replacement for John Terry, who is likely to complette amove to Aston Villa next week.
Originally a midfielder, Bonucci has been a target for a number of Premier League clubs in recent years. Widely respected beforehand, it was his performances at Euro 2016 marked him out as world-class.
A key attribute is his range of passing which has been favourably compared to the legendary Franz Beckenbauer and Ruud Krol. With a strong physical presence and pace, the Italian is an ideal central defender in the modern game.
Chelsea believe he can be bought for around £60m and having been thwarted in their pursuit last summer, are in no mood to be deterred this time around.
With Tiemoue Bakayoko set to join from Monaco, Chelsea’s summer is exploding into life and sending a signal that the Premier League title won so convincingly last year, is just the beginning of the Conte Dynasty.
