To the chagrin of some of the Toon Army, Rafa Benitez is keen to add the winger to his squad this winter. The squad, the fans reason, need goals and defenders, neither of which is the 21-year-old’s strength.
The Brazilian has yet to feature on a regular basis since Antonio Conte took charge at Stamford Bridge and many observers were mystified as to why the Italian blocked Kenedy’s departure during the summer when Newcastle came calling.
A loan deal was agreed between the two clubs, but Conte pulled the plug after the Blues were unable to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, from Arsenal. Despite the presence of Azpilicueta, Moses, Alonso and Zappacosta, who can all play at wing-back, Conte refused to release Kenedy.
Sent home early from the club’s pre-season tour after embarrassing Chelsea with an ill-judged social media post, Kenedy was sentenced to a season with the Under-23 squad.
This season, he has featured for the first team only in their run to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. His only goal came in the 5 – 1 win over Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.
