Olivier Giroud played a pivotal role for France during the 2018 FIFA World Cup title run, but not even that could help him to keep him at Chelsea, club he joined during the January transfer window this year from Arsenal.
Apparently, new manager Maurizio Sarri does not rate the Frenchman highly and he is expected to leave the club during the current transfer period. Teams are already knocking on Chelsea’s door, and Atletico Madrid have already approached the Premier League regarding a potential deal.
The terms of deal are not known yet, but it is believed that Atletico Madrid want to take the former Montpellier star on loan for the entire season. Chelsea are not keen on that idea, though, and they would prefer to part ways with Giroud on a permanent basis.
Giroud scored three goals in 13 appearances for the Blues last season after joining from London rivals Arsenal in January. However, Chelsea still have Alvaro Morata on the squad, plus Michy Batshuayi and they are rumoured to be interested in Gonzalo Higuain. This would convert Giroud in the odd man out.
Atletico Madrid’s primary target this summer is Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic, but it remains to be seen on whether AC Milan want to part ways with the former Fiorentina striker or not.
