Pep Guardiola is set to launch a sensational swoop for Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, 26.
The German international was expected to be sold if Paul Pogba, 23, arrived at the Bernabeu and has publicly declared that he is content to stay in the Spanish capital. City though, are confident that he can be persuaded by Guardiola to join them as they seek to regain the Premier League title.
The pair were together briefly at Bayern Munich before he left in 2014 in a €30m deal. City will have to pay double that to entice Real into a deal.
Pogba’s decision to move to Manchester United has thrown Real Madrid’s summer plans into disarray. The 2016 Champions League winners activated the buy-back clause in 23 year-old striker, Alvaro Morata’s, contract with a view to realising a quick profit on the Spanish international.
The funds were to be used for Pogba’s signature but as it became clear that the French international preferred a return to the Premier League, Zinedine Zidane has changed his mind over keeping Morata. Chelsea have recently seen their £63.7m bid rejected as Real decided to hold onto the player.
With the continued legal action hanging over Karim Benzema, 28, for his alleged part in a blackmail plot, Real fear they could be left short up front if he is handed a custodial sentence by a French court.
Morata, not their first choice as a striker, may yet sneak into the Madrid starting line-up via the back door.
