Liverpool’s summer spending is set to continue with Georginio Wijnaldum, 25, closing in on an Anfield switch. The Dutch international made it clear that the club’s relegation to the Championship meant his time on Tyneside was up.
Talks are ongoing with Newcastle United over the terms of the £25m fee with Liverpool looking to include bonuses in any deal rather paying the significant sum Newcastle are demanding up front.
Wijnaldum was a late substitute in the Magpies 2 – 2 draw at Doncaster last night, playing the final eleven minutes. He has been continually involved in Rafa Benitez’s pre-season preparations.
Although the Spaniard has accepted the winger will leave, he included him in the recent trip to Ireland, as well as the match at the Keepmoat Stadium, in case a buyer could not be found. Interest from Everton and Tottenham dried up with neither side willing to pay the fee demanded.
Liverpool have already left for the USA where they will play Chelsea, AC Milan and Roma. Once the clubs have reached agreement, personal terms are expected to be a formality, leaving the way clear for a medical.
That may take place in the United States but unless it is expected that Wijnaldum will not join up with the squad until they return to the UK at the end of this month.
