It is not a secret that Atletico Madrid have lots of alternatives for their attacking end. Aside from centre forwards such as Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Fernando Torres, the wide options include names such as Saul Niguez, Angel Correa, and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco. Depth is clearly not an issue for them.
However, one name that has disappeared off the team in recent weeks is the one of Nicolas Gaitan. The former Benfica star does not count for Diego Pablo Simeone, and it seems his tenure with Los Colchoneros is about to come to an end.
The 29-year-old will leave Atletico Madrid in January and could move to the English Premier League, his agent has told Foot Mercato. He has been with the team since 2016 after joining from Benfica, but he has not settled as expected with the club.
“I can tell you English clubs are interested,” Gaitan’s agent, Jose Iribarren, said. “Yes, he’ll undoubtedly leave Atletico in January. He has a lot of concrete offers. Nicolas was an important player when he played in Argentina, at Benfica, and with the national team.
“He can’t continue in these conditions. If he can’t play a string of matches, nor win the coach’s trust… A player wants to play. We’re going to see with Atletico which solution we can find.”
Gaitan registered just 11 starts last season, but things have been even worse in the current term since he only has one start between La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
Moving away from Atletico is what’s best for Gaitan at the moment, as he needs to play regularly if he wants to find himself in the Argentina squad looking towards the World Cup next year.
