The Manchester City boss is determined to strengthen his squad with the club’s transfer specialists already working on a deal for the 28-year-old Germany international. It may not be a straightforward deal to strike; Kroos is the new favourite player of Los Merengues president Florentino Perez, following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.
A further complication is a long-standing interest held in the player by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese remains on friendly terms with Perez and hopes to use them to persuade him to sell the 2014 World Cup winner to the Red Devils.
City, whose aspirations of winning the Champions League were dented with a home defeat to Olympique Lyonnais, were sluggish in the summer transfer window but face an uphill task in persuading Real to release the player this winter. More realistic is a deal next summer.
Guardiola worked very briefly with Kroos at Bayern Munich and admired his footballing knowledge, as well as the cultured technique he brings with his game. Despite his determination to hold onto the player, Kroos moved to Real Madrid. Guardiola may yet get his revenge.
