Manchester United are tracking Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos according to the Independent.

The Germany international is seen as the ideal replacement for Michael Carrick, 36, who is set to retire this summer. With the soon-to-be-deposed Spanish champions in disarray, the United hierarchy believe it is a good time to make their move for the World Cup winner.

Speculation is rife that Zinedine Zidane will leave the Bernabeu even if Los Blancos rescue a disastrous campaign by retaining the Champions League. Their 3 – 1 win over Paris St Germain last week fuelled optimism that they will win their third European title in a row.

However, Zidane poured petrol on the flames when he observed that managing at an elite club like Real was exhausting.

Sensing the turmoil ahead, United are already working behind the scenes to bring Kroos to Old Trafford and the 28-year-old offered them encouragement in their pursuit. The Red Devils were interested in landing the German when he left Bayern Munich in 2014 to join Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in an experienced partner for Paul Pogba, 24, after the France international suffered a drop in form. The Portuguese took his protégé out of the limelight for recent matches after criticism of Pogba’s performances.

Kroos arrival, Mourinho believes, would lift the pressure on his expensive acquisition from Juventus and allow him to flourish.
