Leon Goretzka will be one of the most sought-after players during the next summer transfer window. The Germany international is going to renew his contract with Schalke 04, and will reportedly enter the open market if he hasn’t signed a new deal by the end of the season.
There are several clubs that have already expressed interest in acquiring him. Bayern Munich, Juventus, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are some of the teams that are reportedly looking at the 22-year-old, but a new side has emerged as a potential destination for him. We are talking about Manchester City.
According to a report from the Mirror, City’s manager Pep Guardiola has fallen in love with Goretzka’s versatility, and he feels the Schalke star could fill a number of roles due to his ability to play on multiple positions. He profiles better as a defensive midfielder, though, and there is no question he would be a considerable technical upgrade in-house alternatives such as Fabian Delph and Fernandinho.
As mentioned above, City will have some tough competition to land the coveted playmaker. Bayern and Chelsea are already thought to have made an approach to Schalke, and other teams such as Juventus and Manchester United are monitoring the player’s situation closely.
Schalke are likely to sell Goretzka in January, though, because otherwise they would lose him for nothing when his contract expires. So there’s a chance we can see Goretzka wearing a different uniform sooner than later.
