Borussia Dortmund have sealed the return of one of their best players in recent years.
Just like it happened with Mario Götze a few years ago, The Yellow Bees have re-acquired a player they sold to Bayern Munich; this time it happened with central defender Mats Hummels, who’s been confirmed as a Dortmund player this Wednesday.
It’s quite an odd move from Bayern’s side since Hummels made 21 starts for Die Roten last season, but they could be planning to target a new centre-back to play alongside Niklas Süle this upcoming campaign.
On Dortmund’s end, however, is makes a lot of sense. Hummels is an experienced player and while he’s not the dominant centre-back he was only a few years ago, he’s still an above-average player who should do well on a championship-caliber squad. And that’s what Dortmund are looking to assemble.
Plus, Hummels’ experience and ascendancy – as well as his previous stint with the club – could do wonders on the Signal Iduna Park outfit, especially considering Dortmund lacked a defensive leader during most of the 2018-19 season.
Hummels made 118 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. However, he’s spent most of his career at Dortmund where he’s made a total of 309 appearances. He’ll now have the chance to bolster that tally in years to come.
