It’s not a secret that Premier League title holders Manchester City have one of the deepest attacking lines in Europe. The Citizens own a plethora of wingers and attacking midfielders on their current squad, as well as two world-class strikers in Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. But Pep Guardiola wants more.
According to several reports, The Citizens are said to have identified Atletico Madrid starlet Saul Niguez as their top transfer target for the summer. The Spaniard is having another impressive season for Los Colchoneros, and the Premier League giants are ready to go at full force in their attempts to sign the 24-year-old.
It would be a mystery where would Saul play under Pep Guardiola’s management, though. He can operate all over the midfield and while he profiles best as an attacking midfielder, Pep is said to be considering him as a central midfielder. The Spanish tactician sees Saul as the perfect long-term replacement for Fernandinho, which isn’t out of his natural position.
Saul, who has made over 230 first-team appearances with Los Rojiblancos, hasn’t give any indication that he wants a new challenge and it remains to be seen whether City are able to lure him away from the Wanda Metropolitano. But considering he’s under contract with Atletico under 2026 and that he has a whopping €150 million release clause, this transfer might not be easy to materialize.
