Arsenal linked to defender Jose Gimenez, £40m transfer

Arsenal’s need for a new central defender has seen Jose Gimenez, 21, come to the top of their list.

As ever, the price is proving a problem with Atletico Madrid demanding £40m for the talented Uruguayan, despite a £56m release clause in his contract.

Gimenez has made 67 appearances during his time at the Vicente Calderon and has picked up 21 caps for his country.

With Per Mertesacker, 32, out until the New Year and Gabriel, 25, missing for two months, the Gunners are in dire straits defensively.

Despite competent performances from new signing Rob Holding, 21, and Calum Chambers, also 21, Liverpool still scored four times at the Emirates during the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

It’s left Arsene Wenger under intense pressure from the Arsenal faithful to find a solution quickly.

The club have been talking to Valencia for several weeks over Shkodran Mustafi, 24, but have baulked at the £30m asking price demanded.

The Spanish club are in breach of FFP regulations and cannot register new players until they sell. That need and the north London club’s healthy cash reserves has seen them steadfastly refuse to move on the German international’s price.

With West Bromwich Albion rejecting a £16m approach for Johnny Evans, 28, Arsenal are struggling to find the experienced cover needed at a price they are willing to pay.
