The want-away Dutch winger has made it clear he doesn’t want to stay at St James Park following last season’s relegation to the Championship. Everton and Tottenham were leading the chase for his signature but Jurgen Klopp tossed his hat into the ring over the weekend.
Wijnaldum, conscious that his international ambitions will be dented by playing at a lower level, has made no secret of his desire to move. The Newcastle board want £27m for him but are prepared to negotiate the fee. Liverpool are prepared to offer £20m to get talks started.
With the Reds heading to the USA this week as part of their pre-season preparations, Klopp is eager to get the deal moving quickly.
Meanwhile, Klopp is set to sign Augsburg’s Estonian defender, Ragnar Klavan, 30, this week. With an injury crisis at the centre of his defence compounded by the recent sale of Slovakian international Martin Skrtel, 31, to Fenerbahce, the German coach needs to strengthen his squad.
A fee of around €5m signals that Klavan, with more than 100 caps for country to his name, is a squad player with the transfer funds being concentrated on attacking positions.
