A tumultuous summer saw Arsenal just about hang onto the services of Alexis Sanchez, 28. The Chilean international thought he was to join Manchester City on deadline day but his replacement Thomas Lemar, 21, got cold feet about moving to the Emirates.
Knowing Sanchez has no interest in signing a new deal, Arsène Wenger is intent on bringing in a fee for the Chilean this winter rather than letting him leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
With constant reports of a £20m bid from Manchester City, the presumption is that Alexis will move to the Etihad to reunite with Pep Guardiola. However, interest from PSG saw doubts surface about whether the move was that cut and dried.
The emergence of rumoured interest from AC Milan is fuelling speculation that Arsenal may be minded to raid the San Siro in search of Sanchez’s replacement. Andre Silva, 21, is the man the Daily Mirror claims could be object of Wenger’s affections.
The Portuguese international moved to Milan in a €38m deal last summer with a further €2m due to Porto in bonuses.
However, Vincenzo Montella has been unable to build on last season’s improvements and there are genuine fears that missing out on Champions League football may require the sale of Silva to fund another Europa League campaign.
Arsenal are certainly interested in a player who scored 24 goals in 58 appearances for Porto but has so far failed to pull up any trees in Serie A. All 6 of his Milan goals have come in European competition so far.
With Montella’s own position looking increasingly precarious, the pressure on the ‘newbie’ is growing to deliver. Arsenal are poised to help if that gets too much to bear.
