Mario Balotelli, 26, is set to re-ignite his career with Turkish giants, Besiktas. The Italian international struggled for form during a season-long loan spell at AC Milan, scoring a solitary Serie A goal in 23 appearances.
It’s been a spectacular fall from grace for a player once rated as one of Europe’s hottest talents. After impressing at Internazionale, Balotelli has failed to settle at a number of clubs and returned to Milan for two loan spells with AC.
Surprisingly, the Rossoneri didn’t take up an option to buy him in 2014, and the striker instead headed for a disastrous spell at Anfield. His one Premier League goal came in February 2015 at Anfield during the 3 – 2 win over Tottenham and Liverpool moved quickly to loan the misfiring forward back to Milan.
Off-the-field problems have dogged the once-promising youngster and seen him fall from grace, not just with clubs but also the national team. Formerly a mainstay with the Azurri, hasn’t won a cap since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Besiktas have been in talks with his agent and are set to offer Liverpool £5m, a surprisingly high fee for a player with just two league goals in two seasons. Reputations count in football and that has swayed the Turks, with the Reds only too happy to receive something to offset the £16m they paid to sign Balotelli in 2014 to replace Luis Suarez.
