The Argentinean is keen to launch a new title challenge after last season’s spectacular collapse which saw Spurs crumble to third place.
Drinkwater is the latest Foxes star to negotiate a new deal with the Premier League champions. He has seen midfield partner N’Golo Kante, 25, move to Stamford Bridge but Kasper Schmeichel, 29, and Jamie Vardy, also 29, have both extended their stays at the King Power.
Both deals were rumoured to be in the region of £100,000 per week and with Drinkwater on the fringes of the England squad, his agents have rejected the initial offering from the club.
With Riyad Mahrez, 25, still undecided on his future, Claudio Ranieri is keen to prove to the Algerian winger that he is ambitious to match last season and retaining the core of the side is a key plank of that argument.
His cause wasn’t helped by the limp performance the side at Hull City in the Premier League’s opening game of the season. The Foxes became the first defending champions to lose their first game of the following season since the Premier League began in 1992.
