Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt is considered one of the top prospects in European football. And even though the 18-year-old only has two years as a regular squad member for the Eredivisie giants, all signs indicate that he is set to leave Ajax for greener pastures during the upcoming transfer window.
Several top European sides are said to have interest in the 18-year-old centre-back, and it was believed that FC Barcelona were ahead of the pack to land him. However, according to a report from The Mirror, reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are set to make a push to land the Netherlands international as well.
The Bavarians seem ready to make a move for the five-time Dutch international since they believe he is the perfect alternative to inject some much-needed new blood to the team’s defensive line. In fact, he is viewed as the potential long-term replacement of Jerome Boateng and/or Mats Hummels, as both are significantly older than de Ligt.
In fact, Bayern had some scouts on Ajax’s latest Eredivisie game against PSV this past weekend and even though he didn’t particularly impress, it is belived that the reports were encouraging since after all we’re talking about an 18-year-old with almost 50 first-team appearances for Ajax.
However, Bayern Munich will have to compete with Barca since it is believed that Los Blaugranas will submit an official bid during the summer.
The youngster has so far scored 5 goals in 41 Eredivisie appearances, while earning 5 Netherlands caps. He has also been capped by the Netherlands five times.
