Torino are set to launch a January bid for Newcastle United’s wantaway striker Aleksandr Mitrovic, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

The 23-year-old striker is a fan favourite at St James Park but is concerned that his lack of playing time will affect his chances of playing for Serbia in the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

So far this season, he has made 7 appearances mainly from the bench, scoring two goals in the process. It’s a routine he finds frustrating, watching colleagues Dwight Gayle and Joselu preferred by Magpies boss Rafa Benitez.

The Serb didn’t impress the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss with his disciplinary problems on the field and it’s believed Benitez is willing to listen to offers for the striker. Anderlecht, West Ham and Brighton are all monitoring Mitrovic’s situation.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun and earlier this week, Richmond Boakye of Red Star Belgrade.

Torino are currently 9th in Serie A and just two points off the European places. The club hopes the Serbia international’will find his shooting boots in the league where their top goalscorer Iago Falque has just five goals this season.

Amanda Staveley’s takeover of the club set to complete before the transfer window and promising to underwrite a significant transfer spree in January. A new striker is sure to be a high priority as the Toon slip into the relegation fight.
