Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans still hopes to return to the city this summer reports the Daily Mirror.

The West Bromwich Albion centre-back is going to be one of the summer’s bargain buys with his contract including a £3m release clause should the West Midlands club be relegated from the Premier League.

That inevitability will be confirmed in the next fortnight with the Baggies lurching from one defeat to the next. The Hawthorns has long accepted Championship football will be served up next season.

Evans, an experienced Northern Ireland international, was coveted by both Manchester City and Arsenal during recent summers. However, City’s ardour might have cooled with the signing of Aymeric Laporte, 23, from Athletic Bilbao in the winter.

Arsenal approached West Brom with an 11th-hour bid for Evans this January but that was rejected by then-Baggies boss Alan Pardew. The rationale was that Albion stood to lose more if the sale led to their relegation.

Now they weigh the loss of the transfer fee and dropping into the Championship.

Evans now prefers a move to the Etihad and is prepared to disappoint Arsenal to land his dream move. Whether Evans will end up fulfilling his dreams or disappointed himself remains to be seen.
