Spanish media outlet El Gol claims Arsenal have agreed on a €40m deal to sign Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi in January.

Dropped from Sevilla’s squad for recent matches, he appeared in the 3 – 3 draw with Liverpool but was criticised for his performance. The former French international is keen to resurrect his career in the Premier League where he made his name with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

The deal for the 28-year-old is claimed to be €37m with a further €3m in ‘variables’ and would see N’Zonzi arrive to bolster the Gunners chase for a top-four place.

Granit Xhaka, 25, has come in for significant criticism this season as Arsenal struggle to find the consistency needed to stake a claim for next season’s Champions League.

N’Zonzi is seen as the midfield warrior the Arsenal fanbase craves. Not since Patrick Vieira left to Juventus has the club had an aggressive presence in the centre of the pitch.

The Frenchman fell foul of Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo and was dropped initially from the squad to face Villarreal in the league recently. However, the relationship between the pair deteriorated and N’Zonzi finds himself cast aside.

He recently flew to London for meetings to decide his future, denying any deal was in place with the Gunners. Now, it seems, that one has indeed been agreed.
