Chelsea set to launch £43m bid for midfielder Blaise Matuidi

Chelsea are set to launch a £43m bid to bring Paris St. Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi, 29, to Stamford Bridge.

A mixed set of pre-season results has convinced new Blues boss Antonio Conte that they need more depth in midfield. The energetic style of play favoured by Conte requires a solid base in the centre of the park as its base.

In particular, the humiliating first hour against Real Madrid underlined to the Italian the issues he faces. The Spanish giants raced into a 3 – 0 lead enforce the Londoners clawed some respectability into the final 2 – 3 scoreline.

Conte wants the hub of France’s Euro 2016 midfield paired in the Premier League. Having landed N’golo Kante, 25, for £32m earlier this summer, he is halfway there.

The French champions are in no rush to sell though. Club chairman Al Khelaifi told the media that no discussions had taken place over Matuidi’s departure from the Parc des Princes.

New PSG manager Unai Emery is keen to keep the midfielder, a view backed by his chairman::”The transfer window is finished for me. Matuidi is a pillar of the team and is under contract.”

Chelsea are however confident that they can persuade PSG to enter into negotiations with the substantial bid.
