AS Roma are in talks with Manchester United over French international, Anthony Martial, the Daily Mirror claims. The 22-year-old is slipping down the Old Trafford pecking order and needs a fresh start to reinvigorate his career.
After costing United a staggering £36m – potentially rising by another £20m – Martial has failed to impress, suffering second season syndrome. 17 goals in 49 appearances in 2015/16 hinted at an exciting prospect bursting onto the English football scene.
However, his form dipped at the start of 2016/17 when then-new boss, Jose Mourinho, gave him a chance in the side ahead of England international, Marcus Rashford, 19. Reports of marital problems surfaced and Manchester United drew on those rumours as a cause of his poor form.
Earlier in the summer, there was talk of an Arsenal bid for the striker but with Alexandre Lacazette, 26, joining the Gunners, that move appears to be pie in the sky. Serie A proved a redemption ground for Wojciech Szczesny, 27, who spent two years with Roma before being heavily linked with a move to Juventus.
Martial will be hoping for similar success, if he follows the Pole’s path to the Italian capital. Certainly, the chance to shine exists. The Ultras are looking for a new hero following Francesco Totti’s retirement at the end of last season and while Martial isn’t in his class as a player yet, he is an exciting enough prospect for the fans to warm to.
United are believed to be holding out for a £30m permanent move but Roma are more interested in a season-long loan. Perhaps the latter with an option to purchase will surface as the solution.
