Chelsea to rival Tottenham over £31m Michy Batshuayi

A dream move to Tottenham for Marseille striker, Michy Batshuayi, 22, hangs in the balance with the north London club unwilling to meet his wage demands. The Belgian starlet wants £100,000 per week which would make him the club’s second highest earner behind Harry Kane.

Spurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino is a keen admirer of the striker who scored 17 times for Marseille last season in 36 appearances. Batshuayi also found the net as L’OM were beaten 4–2 in the Coupe de France final by Paris St. Germain.

However, the club’s hierarchy are reluctant to meet demands they view as excessive for a relatively unproven player as Tottenham seek to strengthen the squad which fell away so dramatically at the end of last season. If a deal can’t be reached, FC Basel’s 19 year-old striker Breel Embolo is seen as an ideal target although newly promoted Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig, are serious rivals for his signature.

West Ham United were the first Premier League outfit to show an interest in Batshuayi but the player rejected their bid out of hand, preferring to move to a Champions League club after two seasons on the Côte d’Azur. The youngster started with Standard Liege in the Juliper League before 37 goals in 97 appearances earned him a €6m move to Marseille.

With Tottenham dithering over a move for the striker, Chelsea are preparing their own bid thought to be worth £31m with their initial overtures for Alvaro Morata, 23, rejected by Juventus.
