Manchester United are looking to bolster their defensive depth ahead of the upcoming season. It is not a secret that Jose Mourinho has identified several targets to improve the defence looking towads the 2018-19 season. And a new name has sneaked on the team’s agenda.
According to a report from the Mirror, Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is on Jose Mourinho’s radar as he looks to bolster his back-line in the summer. The Greek has emerged as one of the toughest centre-backs in Europe, and Mourinho sees him as the ideal partner for someone like Eric Bailly or Phil Jones.
Sokartis isn’t the team’s first option, though, as the Portuguese tactician would prefer to secure a move for Tottenham star defender Toby Alderweireld, but there is not a lot of clarity regarding the immediate future of the Belgian international. In case Alderweireld stays at Tottenham or signs elsewhere, then Sokratis would act as the team’s primary contingency plan.
Sokratis is enjoying another stellar season for Borussia Dortmund. Even though the team has had a few defensive struggles of late, Sokratis has been extremely consistent and all signs indicate he will leave the team sooner than later. Will Old Trafford become his new home next season?
