Antonio Conte’s frustrating summer is set to continue with Manchester United attempting to hijack Chelsea’s attempts to sign Monaco midfielder, Tiemoue Bakayokom, 22. The Red Devils agreed a £35m deal with the French champions and are in talks with the player’s representatives over a move to Old Trafford.
Coming on the heels of snatching Romelu Lukaku, 24, from under the Blues noses, grabbing Bakayoko will rub salt into tender wounds. Headlines claim that Conte is questioning his future with the hierarchy failing to land any of his prime targets.
Mourinho, schadenfreude firmly intact, is focussed on improving Manchester United’s season ahead but if the Daily Express reports are correct, he is also intent on wrecking Chelsea’s title defence.
Monaco care less about Chelsea’s misfortune in the transfer market with the Blues £35m as good as Mancunian notes coming to the same tally. The only winner here, aside from the club which lands the midfielder, is Bakayoko; a bidding war will manifest in a wages war.
United were hoping to take Nemanja Matic, 28, from Stamford Bridge but as that deal proved slow to materialise, Mourinho interrupted his former employers procession to landing one of Monaco’s stars of their run to the semi-finals of the 2016/17 Champions League.
With United in Los Angeles to begin their pre-season training, Mourinho will hope to conclude the deal quickly and bring the midfielder on board in good time for the opening weekend of the season.
