Liverpool head a queue of Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Porto defender Diogo Leite, claims the Guardian.

The 19-year-old impressed watching scouts during Porto Under-23’s 1 – 0 win over Arsenal Under-23’s earlier this week in the final of the Premier League International Cup. The Gunners and Manchester City are among the other English clubs monitoring his progress.

According to Portuguese media reports carried by the Guardian, Leite has a €15m release clause in his contract, which Arsenal are ready to meet. The two clubs held talks last summer and while the Gunners were keen, Porto preferred to hold onto the centre-back, developing him further before commanding a bigger fee in the future.

However, it’s believed Liverpool are in front of the north London club, particularly with their place in the Champions League final against Real Madrid raising the Merseyside club’s reputation in Europe.

Liverpool’s appeal is enhanced by the progress of youngsters this season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson have all come through to the Reds first-team thanks to Jurgen Klopp’s belief in giving unsung players a chance at the highest level.

Lifting the Champions League trophy in Kyiv will only serve to make Anfield a more attractive proposition for the continent’s youth.
