AC Milan were one of the top spending teams this past summer and many believed they were set to mount a title challenge in the Serie A. But the pieces never quite fit, and once again they find themselves in the middle of the standings.
Milan are not willing to give up, however, and are keen to test the market once again. And according to reports, they are set to bolster their midfield zone, with Ander Herrera currently topping the club’s shortlist.
The Rossoneri have identified the Manchester United playmaker as the perfect alternative to put some much-needed pressure and competition on the likes of Riccardo Montolivo and Lucas Biglia. Ander has not seen many minutes with United this season, and that could be a factor as well even though the midfielder has reportedly said he does not want to leave Old Trafford.
To make things more complicated, Jose Mourinho has no desire to sell the 28-year-old, but the manager’s reluctance to drop either Paul Pogba or Nemanja Matic has seen Herrera’s minutes dwindle.
A desire for more first-team minutes could see Herrera push through a move to the San Siro in a £32 million deal that would trigger a search for his replacement at Old Trafford. Fabinho and Arturo Vidal could be alternatives to replace the Spaniard but it’s all speculation at this point.
