The Argentine striker is valued at £50m and Napoli are ready to meet that fee according to reports in Italy. Arsenal are suggesting £20m in cash and Olivier Giroud, 29, as part-exchange in a compromise deal which solves both clubs’ problems.
Chelsea though have entered the bidding having become frustrated in their attempts to sign Romelu Lukaku, 23, from Everton. Whilst Antonio Conte is keen to bring the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge and is prepared to wait until the end of the transfer window to complete the deal, he is keen not to be left high and dry.
Icardi has been hawked around England and Italy, with Atletico Madrid also interested. However, it seems London is the most likely destination with his agent holding several rounds of talks with Arsenal over a possible move.
Napoli are desperate to replace Gonzalo Higuain, 28, who left for Juventus this summer and are willing to offer Inter a straight cash deal. Despite being recently taken over by a Chinese consortium, there are reports that the Nerazzurri face a cash crisis at the moment.
Selling to their Serie A rivals may not be ideal from a footballing perspective but is certainly an attractive proposition if those reports are true.
