FC Barcelona are set to claim another Liga title in the coming weeks and considering they also have one foot in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League semifinals, it’s safe to say they should start thinking about how to strengthen the side heading into the upcoming 2018-19 season.
One of the position they could strengthen is the left-back role. Lucas Digne has not lived up to the expectations and it seems Jordi Alba does not have a real contender for the starting role. That could change if Barca’s plans come to fruition, as the Liga champions-elect have set their sights on Bayern Munich star David Alaba.
The Austrian international has been linked with a move to Barca in the past, but it seems this time the Liga giants are serious in their intentions. In fact, Alaba is rumoured to be Barca’s top transfer target heading into the upcoming but they would have to reach an agreement with Bayern.
Convincing Bayern that they need to part ways with Alaba is not going to be easy, but at the very least Bayern have enough depth to potentially soften the blow of losing Alaba due to the presence of both Rafinha and Juan Bernat. Both could potentially become the starting left-back in case Alaba leaves the side, although losing the Austrian star could still impact the side.
Barca are believed to be preparing a €50 million + Andre Gomes offer to Bayern. Alaba, 25, is regarded as one of the best fullbacks in Europe, and he has almost 300 appearances for Bayern as well as 60 caps for Austria.
